Dominic Lannutti, or "Nic", as he is fondly remembered, was a dedicated and talented teacher, mentor, and advocate for students. As a research scientist, Nic enjoyed conducting his research on the evolutionary biology of rattlesnakes and the Chihuahuan desert landscape.
Many UTEP students owe much of their success to his guidance. As the program coordinator for the UTEP - EPCC 'Bridges to the Baccalaureate' and ‘STEMGrow’ programs, he mentored many students from minority or challenged backgrounds and helped them to find opportunities at UTEP and beyond. Nic inspired hundreds of students to pursue their dreams and goals through education and professional development. “After having known Nic since he began as a student at EPCC and then continue his academic endeavors at UTEP, I can attest to the fact that he demonstrated a tremendous amount of dedication to helping students overcome obstacles and achieve success. A member of the Class of 2020, Nic defended his dissertation in 2017, in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. His family will accept his degree on his behalf later this year.
Faculty and staff from the College of Science at UTEP are raising funds to create an endowment in his memory. Funds from this endowment will be used to provide graduate student support for research being conducted at The Indio Mountains Research Station or other Chihuahuan Desert site. Preference will be given to UTEP EEB doctoral students and to those that participated in the 'UTEP - EPCC Bridges to the Baccalaureate' or 'STEMGrow' programs.
