Support Groundbreaking Research

On August 3, 2019, El Paso was victimized by the worst criminal violence ever recorded in this county. A criminal from another region drove 10 hours to shoot innocent persons he identified as “Mexicans.” In all 23 persons were killed and 23 others were injured. Similar to other mass shooting incidents, very little is known about the full extent of the economic and financial losses resulting from this terrible event.

Your support is requested to help the UTEP Border Region Modeling Project estimate the total costs associated with this tragedy. By undertaking this effort, we will be able to quantify the full scale of costs inflicted on this region by this crime. Doing so will help raise awareness of the importance of public safety and help alert other regions to the aftermath of such tragedies.

Funds provided for this project will help cover software, data, and personnel costs associated with conducting the research needed to carry out this project. It will also support a graduate thesis project and help a student complete a Master of Science in Economics degree. The effort will also provide a blueprint to other regions who have confronted similar wrongs and need to estimate total damages.
